A ‘shocking’ 80% of writers earn less than the minimum wage

The rags-to-riches tale of JK Rowling, the single mother living on benefits who wrote her Harry Potter masterpiece in a café before making millions, is well known.

Yet according to research by Creative Scotland, she is in a small minority of writers who are paid well for their efforts. More than 80 per cent of writers in Scotland are paid less than the minimum wage, even when income from advances, published works and public appearances is taken into account.
