WINNIPEG – November 2012 – New Media Manitoba (NMM) has published The New Media Census: a groundbreaking three-part initiative for the new media industry in Manitoba, developed by Nordicity.
The Census included (i) an industry profile, (ii) an economic impact analysis and (iii) strategies for success. The determined the new media industry's size, make-up and orientation. The economic impact assessment estimated the impact the new media industry has on the economy. The strategies for success provided detailed recommendations for continuing the growth, sustainability and economic contribution of the new media industry in Manitoba.
Key Industry Profile Findings:
The new media industry in Manitoba generated $38.8 million in 2011. The primary activities undertaken by freelancers in Manitoba are ‘Web Design and Web Application Development’. The new media industry in Manitoba spent $33.6 million in 2011. The majority of initial financing for new companies is ‘self financing’ The new media industry in Manitoba directly supported 436 full time and 126 part-time employees in 2011. The average salary in Manitoba’s new media industry was $44,419 in 2011. The future of the new media industry in Manitoba looks very positive, with expected growth of more than 15%.
Key Economic Impact Assessment Findings:
Manitoba’s new media industry contributed $36.8 million to GDP in 2011. For every $1 of total new media expenditures, the impact to Manitoba’s GDP is $0.94. 94% of new media industry expenditures remain within Manitoba’s economy. The new media industry in Manitoba supports 640 FTEs. The new media industry’s employment impact on Manitoba is $28.5 million. 73% of new media industry expenditures become income for Manitoba residents. Fore every $1 million of new media operational expenditures, the industry created 17.4 person-years of employment in 2011. The Manitoba new media industry and associated spin-off activities resulted in $12.4 million in total tax revenues in 2011. For every $1 of total new media expenditures in Manitoba, $0.32 are generated in total tax revenues.
The Census was the first time that anyone has succeeded in determining the impact new media has on the province of Manitoba. The methodology of The Census consisted of three principal phases: data collection, economic impact analysis and recommendations development, in addition to strategy sessions with key stakeholders.
